Despite being a major oil producer and having four refineries, Nigeria imports 90 percent of its domestically needed refined petroleum products. The imperative of energy security is highlighted by the pervasive energy poverty that characterizes developing countries, especially Nigeria. more Energy constitutes an indispensable catalyst for sustainable socio-economic development. Using Nigeria as a case study, this paper evaluates the party system and provides raisons d’etre for existing mergers. This paper offers insights into the party system and the underpinning motivation for mergers in African politics, namely, that they are essentially motivated by self-interest and driven by rational political calculations aimed at the capture of state power to further prebendal intentions. A major drawback of merger politics in Africa is the lacuna of ideological barrenness, which drives the continued penchant of the political elite to switch parties based on self-aggrandizing permutations. Evidence suggests that party merger in Africa is driven by an entirely different set of logic from mainstream rationalizations that underpin mergers in developed democracies. There have been various forms of party fission and fusion in the quest for the acquisition of state power. more African democracy is still evolving since it began to take root over twenty years ago. It finds a disconnect between the aspirations of the biofuels policy document and the actual state of the biofuels sector. In doing so, this paper uses primary data generated from key informant interviews and augmented with secondary data. This paper assesses the state of the biofuels sector vis-à-vis the stated aspirations of the Nigerian state as captured in the biofuels policy document. The major aspiration of the policy is to harness the country’s biomass potentials and deploy same to meeting Nigeria’s energy needs. In pursuit of its commitment to transit to alternative clean energy, Nigeria developed the biofuels policy document in 2007.

Nigeria is majorly reliant on its non-renewable sources to meet its energy needs. However, this enormous endowment in renewable energy resources has not played any significant role in the country’s energy mix. more Nigeria is rich in renewable energy resources, including diverse biomasses.
